We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Penny Jones, Spleen Australia Manager.

Penny, alongside Prof Denis Spelman, founded Spleen Australia in 2003, after identifying an urgent need to reduce the chances of infection in patients without a functioning spleen.

“The clinical insights and expertise of Prof Spelman instigated Spleen Australia, but it is Penny who gave the service its heart and soul,”.

“She built a strong, long-lasting legacy.”

Under Penny’s leadership, Spleen Australia has grown to support more than 15,000 people in Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia, ensuring patients have access to specialist education and support to reduce their risk of life-threatening infection.

Throughout her time at Spleen Australia, Penny successfully advocated for free vaccines for people without functioning spleens, and supported thousands of patients with the development of personalised immunisation plans and strategies.

Penny passed away on 4 February, she will be fondly remembered for her vibrant personality, dedication, sense of humour, generosity and commitment to supporting patients to continue to live a healthy and fulsome life.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Penny’s colleagues, family and friends.
